A few weeks ago i passed by a homeless man with a sign and a cup half filled with some loose change. It was snowing and freezing and this man was shivering with no where to go. Some people will tell you to ignore the homeless, they’re all scam artist! I tend to believe in the good in all people, so passing by I dropped all the spare change in my coat pocket and went on my way.
No more than two minutes later as Im walking to work I feel a tap on my shoulder. It was the homeless man, handing me back my watch that had fallen off my wrist and into his cup. I was speechless. This watch could have bought him a few meals, but instead he came and returned it to me. As I stood there staring at my watch he walked back to his spot on the sidewalk of this busy Manhattan street, picked up his sign, and continued on with his day.
Hours later I was leaving work, I saw the homeless man still sitting in the same spot, and when he looked up at me, he smiled, as I handed him a cup of coffee, a brown paper bag with a butter bagel, and a note thanking him for returning my watch.
The next day as I walked to work I expected to see this man, but he was gone, and I never did see him there again. I’d like to think that he found a safe, warm place to stay.
Seeing the photo above made me think about this man, and how true it is… The world is full of nice people, and if you can’t find one… Be one. I took a moment to be kind, and the moment came right back to me, so be kind people… Just be kind.
